Edmonton Poetry Festival
Website Design & Development
September 14, 2020
The Edmonton Poetry Festival is an annual celebration of poetry and spoken word in Edmonton and Alberta. The festival presents events featuring a range of poetic styles and artists: from slam to traditional verse; from internationally recognized poets to local stars.
I began this project from the solid foundation of Edmonton Poetry Festival’s strong and well-established brand identity, as well as a comprehensive and well-presented existing website. My predecessor preferred a different CMS other than WordPress, so when I took over the project in 2019, my first move was to convert the entire site to the WordPress platform. The site makes extensive use of custom post types and custom fields to manage several discrete content types that nonetheless interact with one another. I also wanted to implement several features I saw as a way to leverage WordPress functionality and plugins to improve presentation, workflow, and ease of maintenance moving forward, including a full-featured events calendar. I wanted to do all this within a design framework and custom theme that used the festival’s existing aesthetic as a starting point, and built on that to carry it further into what WordPress and Bootstrap make possible. Phase two of the project, launched in spring of 2021, saw festival society membership move in-house with the addition of a Paid Memberships Pro implementation. Future considerations may include exclusive members-only content, and in-house event ticket sales.
